Atlanta Printmakers Studio Announces our Grand Opening Celebration!
Thank you for your gracious support in 2022 as we worked to provide you with a new and improved studio! We're just weeks away from reopening.
Please join us for the Grand Opening of the Atlanta Printmakers Studio in beautiful downtown Hapeville. We are thrilled to be part of this vibrant art community and offer a new, creative space for artists and makers to come together to learn and share their passion for printmaking.
The Atlanta Printmakers Studio is driven by a commitment to community access and arts education. We offer a wide range of printmaking classes, resources, and equipment.
Come see the new studio at our Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, January 28th, 2-5pm.
The search was fueled by a need for more space, a studio that could accommodate more classes and workshops, and still allow space for individual printmakers to work.
The new studio is located at 748 Virginia Avenue in what was once a 1950’s Amoco gas station and is currently being renovated to reflect the original 1950’s design. The 3000 sq ft dream studio will allow for more presses and equipment. Another benefit will be heat and air to provide a more comfortable environment, and anyone who has been to the current studio during the summer or winter will know how great this news is! Other amenities include better parking and the ability to walk to the restaurants and shops of Hapeville.
A very special thanks to Source Urbanism for their vision and design of the new studio! Source Urbanism is an Urban Design, Architecture, Interior Design, and Branded Environments firm serving Metro Atlanta and the Southeast region.
Founded in 2005 and opening its current studio at the Metropolitan Warehouses in 2006, Atlanta Printmakers Studio is the only local community-access print shop with workspace for printmakers and classes for all levels. Their mission is to nurture the practice of printmaking as an original art form among professional artists and anyone who wants to learn. The studio supports a variety of printmaking processes, including screenprint, letterpress, intaglio, relief, monoprint, book arts, and paper making. Classes often run 3 or 4 times a week with occasional workshops on the weekend and other programming held offsite or in partnership with other organizations. APS has worked with the High Museum, the Robert C. Williams Museum of Papermaking, Abernathy Arts Center, Hammonds House Museum, Hudgens Center For The Arts, Museum of Design Atlanta, Southwest Art Center, West End Arts Center, WonderRoot and Wren’s Nest, to name a few, along with galleries such as Kai Lin, Swan Coach House, Chastain Gallery and the former Barbara Archer Gallery. Key programs launched by APS over the years include the annual members exhibit “Pressing Matters”, the Emerging Artist Residency, the Print Big! Steamroller Event, the Collector’s Print Series, and the Atlanta Print Biennial.
APS has been supported by many individuals, businesses and organizations over the years, especially City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs, Fulton County Arts Council, Georgia Council for the Arts, Metropolitan Atlanta Arts Fund|CFGA, the Sara Giles Moore Foundation, and the Lubo Fund. Fundraising is underway to support moving expenses and the necessary build out of the space. APS is a non-profit 501c3 arts organization.
Your donation is completely tax-deductable, and will be cherished by all of us at the Atlanta Printmakers Studio, no matter what the amount. We are so grateful for our wonderful members and supporters - we can’t do it without you! We look forward to welcoming you to our new home! Thank you for your interest and support!
“It seems like just a couple years ago that Stephanie Smith shared her dream of starting a community printmaking studio with Andrea Emmons and myself. The outpouring of interest was beyond what we expected and spurred us on to form this incredible organization. Our initial thoughts of creating a space for artists to make prints morphed into a full range of classes, workshops, internships, residencies, exhibitions, and print collecting. We’ve spent 11 wonderful years making prints at the Metropolitan – thanks to all for such a great experience!” says Executive Director, Kathy Garrou. “Now we’ll be working hard the next few months prepping the new space and organizing the studio to move, but as you know, we are working at what we love. I look forward to personally welcoming everyone to the new studio!”
"The move of Atlanta Printmakers Studio to Hapeville is the next step in the transformation of our community into an arts village for metro Atlanta,” says David Burt, Economic Development Consultant for the City of Hapeville and Executive Director of the Hapeville Arts Alliance. “With our location inside I-285, affordable housing, and eclectic culture, we feel confident that Hapeville is well situated to become a home for the arts in metro Atlanta. Atlanta Printmakers Studio will be located in our new downtown arts district that also includes the Academy Theatre, art galleries constructed from shipping containers, and an expanding collection of public art. We will soon have additional studio space and hopefully artist housing also.” The Atlanta Printmakers Studio will be located at 748 Virginia Avenue in what was once a 1950’s Amoco gas station.
