Pop Art

Pop Art was a visual art movement that emerged during the mid 1950s. Pop artists celebrated commonplace objects and people of everyday life seeking to elevate popular culture to the level of fine art. Perhaps owing to the incorporation of commercial images, Pop art has become one of the most recognizable styles of modern art.

It employs aspects of mass culture, such as advertising, comic books and mundane cultural objects. Characterized by brash, bold, colorful and humorous artwork, Pop Art uses images of popular culture in art, emphasizing the banal or kitschy elements of any culture, most often through the use of irony. It is also associated with the artists' use of mechanical means of reproduction or rendering techniques.

Pop art is now most associated with the work of New York artists of the early 1960s such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, and Claes Oldenburg.
