The Atlanta Printmakers Studio is hosting an exciting community event that celebrates printmaking in a BIG way. The Print Big! Steamroller Event will take place on May 15, from 10am-5pm at the Metropolitan (where APS studio is located). Community arts centers and local college students will join with APS to print large 4 by 8 foot carved blocks using a steamroller. The public is invited to attend the festivities and participate and observe the process. You can view artwork on display, tour the studio or try your own hand at printmaking.
The theme of Print Big! is "Deep-fried & Delicious: Big Plate Specials from the Deep South", and honors the cultural, environmental, and social aspects of food in the south. From soul food to barbeque, vegetables to dessert, Moon Pies to Krispy Kreme donuts, southerners have a strong connection to the foods and related traditions they grew up with. The various 4 x 8 foot woodcuts will be printed on large fabric banners and mounted for display at various local venues.
In addition to Atlanta Printmakers Studio members, participating groups are the Abernathy Arts Center, Clark Atlanta University, Georgia State University, Hammonds House Museum, Kennesaw State University, Morehouse College, SCAD-Atlanta, Southwest Arts Center, Spelman College, Georgia College and State University, The Westminster Schools, and Wonder Root
Print Big! Is free and open to the public. The event coincides with the annual APS membership drive, which encourages individuals to join APS in its mission to promote printmaking. New members will be eligible for door prizes and will receive $5 off membership when they bring 2 cans of food for donation.
Print Big! is also part of the 2nd Annual West End Art and Studio Tour, which will be taking place that day at the Metropolitan, The B Complex, Hammonds House Museum and the Wrens Nest. Maps and information about the tour will be available on site.
Funding for this program is provided in part by the Fulton County Commission under the guidance of the Fulton County Arts Council, by the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs, and by the Georgia Council for the Arts through the appropriations of the General Assembly, as administered by the Fulton County Arts Council, the GCA-designated Grassroots agency.
Sponsors of Print Big! are Graphic Chemical and Ink Co., Danger Press, Utrecht Art Supplies, and McClain's Printmaking Supply. Partners are The Metropolitan and WE Tour.
